Bursaries for Students with Disabilities in South Africa

Students with disabilities have access to dedicated bursaries as well as higher income limits and extra support in many mainstream programmes. This page explains what is available and lists bursaries that welcome or specifically target applicants with disabilities.

NSFAS for students with disabilities

NSFAS accepts students with disabilities from households earning up to R600,000 a year, compared with R350,000 for other applicants. It can also fund assistive devices and human support where needed. You will need to complete a disability annexure form when you apply. See our NSFAS guide.

Dedicated disability bursaries

Several companies and trusts run bursaries only for students with disabilities, often in any field of study. Others reserve a share of their awards for applicants with disabilities or relax some requirements. The list below shows bursaries in our directory that mention support for students with disabilities.

Tips for your application

  • Have an up-to-date medical report or disability confirmation ready, as most providers ask for one.
  • Register with your university’s disability unit, which can help with accommodations and funding advice.
  • Mention any support you need, such as assistive technology or a scribe, so the funder can plan for it.
  • Apply widely. Many mainstream bursaries actively encourage applicants with disabilities.
